Rigid Board Insulation Installation
When most homeowners think of insulation, they picture the pink fibers that look kind of like cotton candy. In other words, they think of "fluffy" insulation, but there is another type of insulation that can help reduce your energy bills – rigid foam board insulation.
Rigid board insulation is exactly like it sounds – it is available as a foam panel that can be cut easily enough. 2' x 8' and 4' x 8' are the sizes most often used, but the panels vary in thickness and width. Rigid Foam Board Insulation
There are three types of rigid foam board insulation:
- Polyisocyanurate (polyiso): polyisocyanurate rigid board insulation typically comes with reflective foil facing on both sides. This makes it ideal for the attic, as the foil helps your home reflect, rather than absorb the sun's energy, creating a much cooler environment in the summer.
- Extruded polystyrene (XPS): extruded polystyrene rigid board panels have smooth, plastic surfaces and are extremely durable. XPS rigid foam board insulation is also ideal if you are worried about water infiltration issues, as it doesn't absorb water easily.
- Expanded polystyrene (EPS): EPS rigid board insulation is also good for reducing moisture infiltration and can be used for both new construction projects and re-insulating. It has a lower R-value than both XPS and polyiso board.

The benefits of installing rigid foam board insulation don't differ significantly from installing other types of insulation. Rigid board insulation can:
